"Da Auld Restin' Chair", also known as "The Resting Chair" is a Shetland slow air in 4/4 time and
B Minor. The parts are played AABC.
It was composed by the Shetland teacher, collector, composer and fiddler
Tom Anderson, in memory of his grandfather, who first taught him the instrument. There is a
photograph of Anderson's grandparents in Anderson & Swing's Haand Me Doon da Fiddle, along with
the note:
"Dis is a slow air o' me ain at I composed in 1968 whin I fan at Hamnavoe, whaur me grandfather
bedd, da brucks o' da auld resting chair dat he sat upo whin he wis learnin me ta play da fiddle."
It was printed in Anderson & Swing's Haand Me Doon da Fiddle (1979).
It was recorded by Buddy MacMaster on Glencoe Hall,
Dexter et al on Over the Water (1993),
Joe Thoma on Up the Track: Traditional Music from Kenmare,
Jackie Daly, Seamus & Manus McGuire on Buttons and Bows (1984) and
